Who We Are & What Drives Us

An industry cluster built on a shared conviction — that collaboration across companies, universities, and research institutions accelerates scientific progress for everyone.

ABOUT TOOLPOINT

The Laboratory Instrumentation Cluster for Switzerland and Beyond

Toolpoint for Lab Science is an industry cluster that brings together the expertise of the laboratory instrumentation sector in Switzerland and neighbouring countries. Founded in 2003 by companies in the Greater Zurich Area, it connects companies, universities, research institutes and partners with a shared goal: making laboratory processes more effective and efficient — from sample collection to actionable results.

Its member companies serve customers across a wide range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, government, and healthcare. Their technologies — spanning instruments, software and integrated automation solutions — support applications from industrial quality control and environmental analysis to biopharmaceutical R&D, in-vitro diagnostics and forensic testing.

What makes Toolpoint distinct is not only the breadth of its membership, but the depth of collaboration it enables. By fostering direct dialogue across company boundaries, the cluster creates the conditions for joint projects, shared innovation, and the kind of strategic knowledge transfer that single organisations could not achieve alone.

Our History

The Emergence of Lab Science in the Greater Zurich Area

50%+

of global liquid handling market sales originate from the Greater Zurich Area

From humble beginnings in post-war precision mechanics to a globally recognised hub for laboratory instrumentation — the story of “Pipetting Valley” is one of vision, craftsmanship, and collaboration.
1800–1850
Industrial Roots Around Lake Zurich
Industrialisation began in the region when the first spinning mills were established, with weaving mills soon following. Hydropower was a key locational factor. Talented tool manufacturers and specialised technical knowledge were required to maintain this equipment, and emerging technologies in electrics and electronics complemented existing mechanical expertise — planting the seeds of a precision engineering culture.
1945
Founding Moment
Erhard Mettler Founds a Precision Mechanics Company in Küsnacht
Known for his invention of the Mettler scales, Erhard Mettler established a precision mechanics company for the development and production of analytical laboratory scales. This marked the first company in the region to work in the field of lab science tools — and the birth of what would become a world-leading industry cluster.
1980
Milestone
Tecan Founded in a Cellar in Hombrechtikon
Heinz Abplanalp founded Tecan, with the start-up phase accelerated by an outsourcing contract from US company Hamilton and its subsidiary in Bonaduz, Grisons. Tecan went on to produce measurement, analysis and laboratory automation instruments for the lab science industry, becoming a respected global player. The expanding pharmaceutical industry provided discerning and growing demand, while small laboratories too benefited from the new technologies.
1993
"Pipetting Valley" Takes Shape
Heinz Abplanalp left Tecan and founded Rosys Instruments, laying the foundation stone for today's "Pipetting Valley" — the name the region earned due to its remarkable concentration of lab science tool companies. The term would later gain international recognition as the cluster continued to grow.
1998
Rosys Instruments Acquired by Qiagen
Rosys Instruments was acquired by Qiagen, based in Hilden, Germany — a further sign of the growing international relevance of the region's lab science capabilities and the expanding commercial appetite for Swiss precision instrumentation.
2000–2001
New Start-ups Reinforce the Cluster
SIAS (2000), founded by Pius Fink, Clare Dench and Robert Kundert, and Xiril (2001) both established themselves in Hombrechtikon. Both have grown strongly since, further reinforcing the density of expertise and entrepreneurship that defines the region's lab science identity.
2003
Toolpoint Founded
The Cluster Initiative is Born
The concentration of growing and successful industry players and technologically advanced suppliers in the region had positive consequences. A group of visionaries — including local entrepreneur Peter Schleiffer (Schott Schleiffer) and Dr Michael Collasius (Managing Director, Qiagen Instruments) — founded the Toolpoint for Lab Science cluster initiative together with the most important industry representatives and suppliers, registering it as an association. The objectives: establish a beneficial network, enable collaboration across company boundaries, and simplify technological and knowledge transfer.
Now
Present Day
A Growing Network with an Expanding Radius
Toolpoint has grown strongly since its inception, along with its associated network. The organisation's radius has extended over the years, yet the vast majority of members can still be reached within a good hour's drive — a testament to the enduring geographic concentration of the industry. Toolpoint has also substantially expanded its range of services, ensuring that the lab science tools industry continues to create value in the region, and that "Pipetting Valley" continues to grow.
